Common Vision Problems
Short-sightedness (myopia)
Struggling to see clearly in the distance, but close-up vision is fine?
This is a common symptom of short-sightedness, or myopia. It occurs when the eye is slightly longer than normal or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. As a result, distant objects appear blurred—making tasks like driving or watching TV more difficult—while near tasks like reading remain clear. Myopia often begins in childhood and may progress with age, especially during school years.
The good news is that myopia is easily corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or specialist options like myopia control lenses.
With a simple eye test, we can determine the degree of short-sightedness and recommend the best solution to improve distance vision. Regular check-ups are important, especially for children, to monitor changes in prescription and overall eye health.
Long-sightedness (hyperopia)
Having difficulty focusing on close-up tasks like reading or using a phone?
Long-sightedness, or hyperopia, affects your ability to see objects up close, though distant vision may remain clear. It happens when the eye is too short or the cornea is too flat, causing light to focus behind the retina. Common symptoms include eye strain, blurred near vision, headaches, or tired eyes—especially after reading or screen time.
Hyperopia can be easily corrected with prescription glasses or contact lenses.
During an eye test, we assess how well your eyes are focusing and prescribe lenses that bring close-up objects into sharp view. Regular check-ups are important to ensure ongoing comfort and clear vision for all your daily activities.
Astigmatism
Are your eyes struggling with blurry or distorted vision at any distance?
This could be due to astigmatism—a common condition where the cornea or lens has an irregular shape, more like a rugby ball than a football. This uneven curvature prevents light from focusing evenly on the retina, leading to blurred or stretched vision. Astigmatism can occur on its own or alongside short- or long-sightedness.
The good news is that astigmatism is easily corrected.
Customised prescription glasses or contact lenses can refocus the light properly and restore clarity. During your eye exam, we’ll measure the exact degree of astigmatism and find a solution tailored to your needs for sharp, comfortable vision.
Presbyopia
Noticing it’s harder to read menus or text on your phone without holding it further away?
This is a natural part of ageing called presbyopia, which typically begins around the age of 40. It happens when the lens inside the eye loses flexibility, making it harder to focus on near objects. You may notice eye strain, headaches, or the need for brighter light when reading.
Presbyopia is very common and easily managed with the right lenses.
Options include reading glasses, varifocals, bifocals, or multifocal contact lenses—each designed to help you switch focus smoothly from near to far. At your eye exam, we’ll guide you through the options and help you find the most comfortable solution for your lifestyle.
Amblyopia (lazy eye)
Does one eye seem weaker, or is your child struggling with depth perception or vision in one eye?
This could be amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye. It occurs when the brain starts favouring one eye over the other, often due to a vision problem like a squint or uncorrected prescription in early childhood. If left untreated, the weaker eye may not develop proper visual connections, leading to long-term visual impairment.
Early detection is key to improving outcomes.
Amblyopia is usually treated in childhood through glasses, eye patches, or vision therapy to strengthen the weaker eye. Regular children’s eye exams are essential to catch issues early—when treatment is most effective. Our team is experienced in working with children to make visits as stress-free as possible.
